Brian Magee is hoping to push towards a world title fight after his ambition to win back the British belt was thwarted.

Magee, who vacated the title in order that Tony Quigley could box — and defeat — Tony Dodson was to have boxed the winner but instead the British Board have said the champion must box Manchester’s Paul Smith.

Magee’s manager Pat Magee said: “We’re disappointed with the board’s decision but Brian has to move on. So Brian will box at the start of October on the supporting bill to Carl Froch and we would hope he will box a top American which can push him up the world rankings.

“There’s a new series between the best super-middleweights and a World title chance could well come Brian’s way.”
