18 Jun 2009

After losing two of his last three bouts, former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli says he will walk away from boxing if he fails to beat Denis Lebedev (17-0, 12 KOs), whom he fights in a WBO eliminator bout on July 18. In an interview on Setanta Sports News, Maccarinelli said he hoped to get his career back on track following his shock defeat to Ola Afolabi in March. He said: “I was so devastated by the way I performed last time out ; it just hit me for six. I was offered a nice, easy warm up to get me back in the swing of things. Or they offered me this undefeated Russian. Basically I said ‘give me the Russian’.” Now working with new trainer Karl Ince, Maccarinelli has his sights set on a rematch with Afolabi – if he can overpower Lebedev. “All I want is Ola. That’s the only fight I want. I spoke to Frank [W*****] and this is a way to get me one step closer to Ola, quickly. If the fight can be made Frank’s the man to make it. Until I fight Ola again my boxing career isn’t going to move on. With Ola I fought well below my best. That’s the fight that I want, but first I’ve got to get past Denis Lebedev.”

I think he still has alot to offer the division and he didn't seem right against Afolabi while Ola looked a decent fighter skillwise and took his opportunity.

Anyone have info on his new trainer Karl Ince? - I know nothing about him.

I think he's been a shot fighter since Haye put him away in emphatic style. Might be wrong, but i think he's one of those fighters who never recover from such a k.o, let alone 2.
