I will never understand why Barry agreed to fight in that searing heat. In the Kings Hall in Belfast he'd beat Cruz everytime. Stevie was an ok fighter but lost in his first defence, the heat was the real cause of McGuigan's downfall.

Completely agree.

I remember staying up late at a young age for this fight. That last round was horrible to watch. Idiotic taking the fight outdoors in Vegas in the mid day sun.

It's testament to how good McGuigan actually was that he still almost won that fight despite everything. Easy to forget it was a belter of a scrap as well. Barry was superb value back then. If it wasn't for that cut against McDonnell, we'd have had McGuigan v Azumah Nelson, my dream fight. Still cannot forgive Jimmy Mac for depriving us of that...  Sad

He had the heart to take it on and was naeive. His manager should have looked out for him. That's his job.

Barry told the full story in print as I remember. Barney Eastwood took Barry to the cleaners for libel, bankrupted him and forced him to consider a comeback around 1993/94 something like that. The court ordered all copies of Barry's book to be taken off the shelves and pulped.
