Nkosinathi Joyi outclassed Florante Condes from the Philippines in scoring a unanimous 12 round points decision in their IBF mini-flyweight title eliminator at the Orient Theatre in East London on Friday night. Joyi (47,55kg) who was in control from the first round won with scores of 120-107 by judges Wally Snowball and Deon Dwarte and judge Isaac Tshabalala had it 119-108. In an all southpaw clash Condes (47.00k) put up a gutsy performance against the taller Joyi 20-0; 15 who had him down in the twelfth round, but could not finish off the courageous little battler. Joyi never lost a round as Condes 23-5-1; 20 who battled to get past the South African’s stiff right jab was unable to penetrate Joyi’s tight defence.

American referee Bill Clancy must be congratulated and a most competent performance as he gave Condes two time-out breaks to recover from a low blow and an accidental clash of heads without making a big issue of the incidents.

His positioning in the ring was outstanding and Boxing SA would well advised to use a recording of this fight to show local referees the finer points of refereeing. The way he controlled the fight was reminiscent of Stan Christodoulou at his best.

Joyi is now in line to challenge for the IBF mini flyweight title held by Raul Garcia 26-0-1; 16 of Mexico. The 26-year-old Garcia who also fights from the southpaw stance won the belt when he beat Condes on a split decision June 2008. He has made successful defences against Jose Luis Varela on two occasions and Ronald Barrera.
