Any of you cheerful chappies going? Really looking forward to it, think they much up a lot better than Quigley and it'll be a candidate for domestic foty (while it lasts)

SECONDS OUT: Countdown to big Mersey match-up between Paul Smith Jnr and Tony Dodson at the ECHO Arena

IN seven days’ time the waiting will be over, we’ll know just who is the best super-middleweight on Merseyside and which Scouser is destined to go on to the next level.

Will it be the new champion, Paul Smith Jnr, the former amateur international who has finally found his feet in the professional ranks?

The former Contender contestant who, after 28 fights, finally made the leap into real championship class and rose to the occasion in front of a huge home fan base. Or has the former champion, at 29, got one more trip to the well left in his tank?

Can Tony Dodson reproduce the kind of all-action style which came so close to seeing him regain the Lonsdale Belt 12 months ago?

Both fighters lay great claims to why they should be the one waking up seven days from now with that prized golden British title belt sitting next to them.

After a slow couple of years, Smith is living up to the pressures and expectations of the earlier part in his career now.

An intelligent and thunderous puncher, he insists that weight issues dogged his progress for a while and only now does he feel like he’s found his true weight division.

His fight against Tony Quigley in October may well be remembered as a bit of a stinker, but don’t forget that when it mattered most – in the championship 11th and 12th rounds – Smith came on strong to find the shots that made the difference.

Promoter Frank Warren has been patient with Smith so far, but that’s unlikely to continue, especially if he finds himself in the losing corner come Friday night. And when the pressure is on Smith is a proven performer.

However, his recent performances have had a habit of leaving fans frustrated. So much talent, but seemingly so little desire to commit, Smith has a nasty habit of letting his work-rate drop dramatically which, against the Dodson of 12 months ago at least, would be disastrous.

That said, it’s worth noting that Dodson is 12 months older than on the night when, let’s not forget, he lost to Quigley. That was the best Dodson has ever looked, yet he still went home empty handed.

He used his natural size, strength and fitness advantage to its best effect last March, but had to fight back from the brink after getting caught early in the fight, gambled and lost down the stretch despite being up on the judges’ scorecards.

If Dodson can fight the way he did against Quigley through rounds four to 10 next week then Smith’s reign could well be a short one.

But if Dodson gets caught early, Smith has the experience to know how to get the job finished. If Dodson gets caught early then the 8,000 or so packed into the ECHO Arena will make it out in time for last orders.

Is Smith the real deal at last? And has Dodson’s punch resistance all but gone? Or, did Quigley get lucky last year against the true champion? And is Smith nothing more than a lazy blown up middleweight?

Next Friday night all will be revealed . . . Seconds Out!

British Super-Middleweight king Paul Smith has branded rival Tony Dodson the Jellyman of boxing.

After political heavyweights Peter Mandleson and David Cameron went at it last week, now it's the turn of Britain's best super-middleweights.

The pair clash at the Liverpool Echo on Friday night with Smith's British title on the line, live on Sky Sports 1.

Since the fight was announced, insults have been flying, with Dodson latest attack claiming that Smith was boxing's equivalent of pop star Peter Andre.

But now Smith has hit back, and says Dodson will wobble under intense pressure on Friday.

"When I see Dodson at the weigh in on Thursday I fully expect his hands to be shaking," blasted Smith.

"But it will be his legs that will turn to jelly once I land on his glass jaw on Friday night.

"Dodson has always had a problem with pressure, and I don't expect things to change this week.

"For me, he's the Jellyman of British boxing, always has been, always will be.

"He has got a soft centre and I will expose it on Friday.

"Dodson trembled against Carl Froch, he teetered against Tony Quigley and he will flop against me.

"His chin isn't good enough for this level and once I land on it, he'll be knocked him out.

"I'll be turning up the heat on Friday, and Dodson will melt, he can't stand the heat.

"The Echo Arena is a fantastic place for boxing, and it's going to be like a pressure cooker on Friday night.

"That's the kind of atmosphere I thrive in, but I know that secretly Dodson would prefer to be at home looking at his computer."

I usually get my tickets through Swifty (Paul's younger brother Stephen) but had to give it a swerve this time round. One of my good mates engagement parties on friday.

I believe Smith will stop Dodson between rounds 6-10.

I was so chuffed when Smigga won the British title, he's never really hit full potential, now hopefully he can kick on from here. I would love to see him fight Stieglitz for the WBO title in the near future
