Ex-champ Macca headed to Russia
Faces Kotlobay April 27 for Euro belt

By Alexey Sukachev

Less than a year since suffering a brutal stoppage by Russian slugger Denis Lebedev, former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (31-4, 24 KOs) will have a chance to erase bad memories of the disastrous 2009 and get himself back into contention. All he needs to accomplish to achieve this goal is to overcome the resistance of another Russian power hitter in Alexander Kotlobay (18-1-1, 12 KOs). The fight between two 200lb contenders is officially set for April 27 at Yubileiny Sports Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. Vacant European (EBU) title will be up for grabs. St. Petersburg-based Jab Promotion stages the entire show.

WBC #23 Swansea native Maccarinelli, who has got two easy first-round destructions over soft opposition recently, may very well find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. WBC #18 Kotlobay, who turns 30 on April 1, is on a hot roll with several wins over more established opposition and seems to be hitting his prime. Over a year and a half, Kotlobay, whose only loss came in a dubious decision to recently retired red Hugger of Denmark, scored stoppage wins over Czech Lubos Suda (20-3-1), Hungarian Jozsef Nagy (20-3-1), Argentinean Mauro Ordiales (23-6) and previously unbeaten fellow compatriot Valery Volozhenin (12-0-1). He also holds PABA interim and IBF International cruiserweight titles and is aiming at more prestigious belts.

“The agreement has already been signed, so Kotlobay shouldn’t worry about any uncertainty. His most important task is to be 100 percents on the day of the fight”, said Alexander Yagupov, Jab vice-president. “After a couple of crushing defeats, Maccarinelli is like a wounded animal, and we shan’t underestimate him. He will fight at his best sensing it might be his last chance for glory. It should be a terrific battle but we believe in Kotlobay”, said Jab Promotion president Vitaly Supichenko. The winner of the fight will most probably take on undefeated German kayo artist Alexander Frenkel (22-0, 17 KOs) in early fall.

The undercard will feature two more title twelve-rounders and at least a couple of smaller fights. PABA and WBO Europe welterweight titleholder Sherali “The Lion” Mamadaliev (10-0, 6 KOs) will put his belts at stake for the first time. Opposing the local Tajik stalker will be Belgian Herve De Luca (14-4-1, 7 KOs). Recent world title challenger Dmitry Sukhosky (14-1, 9 KOs), who gave a tough fight to Juergen Braehmer and is now ranked #13 by the WBO, clashes against Argentinean journeyman Pablo Daniel Zamora Nieves (24-7-1, 15 KOs) for a vacant IBF international title. Deeper undercard features a rematch between Elis Idrisov (3-1, 1 KO) and Latvian Andrejs Barabanovs (4-0, 3 KO), also Ivan Maslov (5-3-1) collides with experienced Ukrainian veteran Vladimir Borovsky (21-37-2, 10 KOs).

Fair play to Enzo its a dangerous enough fight but the risk is worth the reward. If he wins the European title he will get a top 10 WBC ranking and a few more good fights and maybe a another title shot. I don't know how much he as left in the tank but fair play to him for trying.
