Moylette gets victory in Ankara

Friday, 17 June 2011 21:14
Ray Moylette got Ireland's European Championships campaign off to a fine start with a convincing win over Subhi Amara in Ankara, Turkey today.

The 2008 AIBA World Youth champ stopped the Israeli in round two. Moylette was 19-4 ahead when Amara took his third standing count late in the frame.

The St Anne's BC man was the only Irish boxer in action today. He will now meet Ljubomir Marjanvic of Serbia in the last-16 on Monday.

John Joe Nevin, Willie McLaughlin, Con Sheehan and Cathal McMonagle will be between the ropes tomorrow.

Ireland continue winning ways in Turkey

Saturday, 18 June 2011 21:56
Tipperary's Con Sheehan completed a perfect day for Ireland at the European Championships following his win over Levan Guledani of Gerogia in Ankara, Turkey.

The Clonmel BC heavyweight was 14-12 up in the third and final round when Guledani was retired with a hand injury.

Earlier in the day, John Joe Nevin, Cathal McMonagle and Willie McLaughlin claimed victories to make it five wins from five in the last 24-hours for the nine-man Irish squad.

Donegal welterweight McLaughlin beat 12-8 Stephen Banyo of Holland over three, three minute rounds to set up Sunday's last 16 duel with Borna Katalinic of Croatia.

McMonagle claimed a countback win over Mane Marceta of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the super-heavyweight class in Turkey.

The Holy Trinity Belfast club-man had his hand raised in victory on accepted scores (75-74) following a 15-15 tie in Ankara.

McMonagle will now meet England's Anthony Joshua in the last 16 on Monday.

Cavan BC bantamweight John Joe Nevin - following Ray Moylette's win yesterday - made it two wins in a row for Ireland this morning.

The 2009 AIBA World Championships bronze medalist and European Union champ beat Pavol Inchenko of the Ukraine 19-13.

He will take on Nikoloz Izoria of Georgia on Monday.

Sheehan, meanwhile, will face Abdulkhamid Nurmagomedov of Russia tomorrow. McLaughlin, Irish team captain Darren O'Neill, Michael Conlon and Michael McDonagh will also be in action Sunday.

Another strong squad from the emerald isle. You are going to have some strong contenders at the olympics next year. Always impressive to see such strength in depth.

For those who didn't follow the build up, Ireland held late box offs for places in the euro's and some excellent lads with previous tournament experience didn't make it into the team.

Yeah it's great to see depth in the squad as well as strong contenders in most weight categories. They are there or there abouts in most tournaments and always do us proud! Smiley

O'Neill through to final 16 in Turkey

Sunday, 19 June 2011 20:08
Irish team captain Darren O'Neill progressed to the last-16 of the European Senior Championships in Ankara, Turkey.

But there was disappointment for Michael McDonagh and Con Sheehan following reversals to the Ukraine and Russia.

McDonagh lost 16-6 to Valodymyr Matvichuk and Abdulkhamid Nurmagomedov had three points to spare (22-19) over Sheehan in a thrilling heavyweight contest.

Kilkenny southpaw O'Neill, meantime, beat Denis Radovan 16-9 - his second win over the German middleweight in the last two months.

Earlier on Sunday, Willie McLaughlin and Michael Conlon booked their places into the quarter-finals with wins over Croatia and England.

Donegal welterweight McLaughlin beat Borna Katalinic 20-14 and Belfast flyweight Conlon produces a storming final round to beat Beijing Olympian and 2010 European silver medalist Khalid Yafai of
England 19-10.

Ward closes in on a medal

Monday, 20 June 2011 19:31
Irish team captain Darren O'Neill eased into the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Ankara, Turkey with a 24-12 win over Victor Cotiujanschi of Moldova this evening.

But Cathal McMonagle's brave attempt to reach the quarter-final ended in disappointment after he lost 22-18 to England's Anthony Joshua in the super-heavyweight category.

O'Neill, who claimed silver at the 2010 European Championships in Moscow, will now meet Dmytro Mytrofanov of the Ukraine in Tuesday's last-eight middleweight eliminator.

Earlier, AIBA World Youth champ Joe Ward won on his European debut and is now just one victory away from claiming at least bronze at the 2011 Championships.

The 17-year-old southpaw, who boxes out of the Moate BC in Westmeath, beat Ainar Karlson of Estonia 10-7 this afternoon to march into Tuesday's light-heavyweight quarter-finals where he'll meet Fiori Simeno of Italy.

Ward was 3-2 up after the first round but Karlson pulled it back to 5-5 in the second.

However, Ward found the target five times and conceded just two in the third.

Karlson was beaten 7-4 by Ken Egan in the quarter-finals of the 2010 European Championships in Moscow.

Meanwhile, John Joe Nevin and Ray Moylette joined Michael Conlon and Willie McLaughlin in the quarter-finals with impressive victories over Nikoloz Izoria and Ljubomir Marjanvic in Turkey earlier today.

Nevin beat the Georgian bantamweight 15-10 in Ankara to set up a last-eight clash with former European Junior champion Dmitry Polyanskiy of Russia on Tuesday.

Moylette beat Serbia's Marjanvic 17-16 in a 33-point light-welterweight thriller.

The 2008 AIBA World Youth champion will now face Maksim Ignatiev of Russia in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

All six Irish boxers will be guaranteed at least bronze if they win on Tuesday.

Ward and Moylette guaranteed medals

Tuesday, 21 June 2011 19:59

AIBA World Youth champ Joe Ward is guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the European Championships in Turkey after just his eight senior bout.

The Moate BC Westmeath teenager beat Italian light-heavyweight Fiori Simeno 15-13 this afternoon to progress to Thursday's semi-final where he'll meet Imre Szello of Hungary.

Ray Moylette, who won an AIBA World Youth title in 2008, also guaranteed himself bronze following his 14-13 quater-final victory over Russian light-welter Maksim Ignatiev.

Earlier this afternoon, Donegal welterweight Willie McLaughlin lost out in his quest to secure at least a bronze medal following a reversal to Zaal Kvachatadze of Georgia in Ankara, Turkey this afternoon.

A cracking 69Kg duel saw Kvachatadze claim the first round 5-6 and take a 18-15 lead into the third en route to a 28-21 decision.

Belfast flyweight Michael Conlon lost out to 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Vincenzo Picardi.

The experienced Italian, a bronze medal winner at the 2007 AIBA World Championships and 2010 European Championships, was handed a 26-20 decision over the 19-year-old, who was competing in just his 9th senior international in Ankara.

'Michael was in against a very experienced opponent and he gave it 110% and we couldn't have asked for anything more. This is his first major international tournament and he has a big future in the sport,' said IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O'Rourke.

Ray Moylette and John Joe Nevin both experienced mixed fortunes versus Russian opponents - and both by one point margins.
Moylette, a gold medal winner at the 2008 AIBA World Youth Championships in Mexico, guaranteed himself at least bronze after coming from behind to beat Maksim Ignatiev 14-13 in the light-welterweight class.

But Nevin lost 13-12 to former European Junior champion Dmitry Polyanskiy at bantamweight.

Irish team captain Darren O'Neill, a silver medal winner at the 2010 European Championships, is also out after dropping a 17-10 decision to Dmytro Mytrofanov of the Ukraine in the middleweight category.

Moylette, who boxes out of the St Anne's BC in Westport, was 6-3 and 10-9 down after the first two rounds but produced a fantastic third frame to seal victory.

He'll now meet Hajiliyev Heybatulla of Azerbaijan in Thursday's 64Kg semi-final.

Wednesday is a rest day at the Championships. The semi-finals will be held Thursday and the finals Friday.

I'm interested to see how Ward goes in this. Its his first senior tournament and after seeing him beat up Kenny I think he's a good future. He's a tough fight next but if he was to make the final that is a serious achievement for a man with 9 senior fights.

Yeah. There's such strength and depth in the squad now that you know they are very good to get picked and not just place fillers.

Moylette guaranteed silver after semi win

Thursday, 23 June 2011 14:07
Ireland's Ray Moylette will win a silver medal at least at the AIBA European Boxing Championships after beating Hajiliyev Heybatulla in their light-welterweight (64kg) semi-final bout in Turkey this afternoon.

The contest consisted of three rounds of three minutes each and took place with new scoring rules designed to stop boxers from boxing tactically.

Moylette was the more energetic fighter in the early stages of the fight and, despite being pushed to the ground twice by his Azerbaijani opponent, he appeared to be confident he had built a lead by the third round.

Slick defensive work, with Moylette dropping his gloves and moving his head to avoid Heybatulla's desperate attempts to close the gap towards the end, helped him complete the job.

And, althought he result was not certain, Moylette punched the air as the final buzzer went.

The St Anne's Westport fighter's victory became official soon after, and he will have a chance to box for gold on Friday.

Light-heavyweight Joe Ward is due in the ring later this afternoon. He will box in the seventh bout of the second session, which begins at 5.30pm.

Moylette and Ward guaranteed silver medals

Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:14
Ray Moylette and Joe Ward are both guaranteed silver medals at least at the European Championships in Ankara, Turkey following semi-final victories today.

Moylette secured a hard-fought victory over Hajiliyev Heybatulla of Azerbaijan. The St Anne's BC Westport light-welterweight, a gold medal winner at the 2008 AIBA World Youth Championships in Mexico, won 18-16.

An extremely close duel saw both boxers share the first round 4-4 and the second 9-9 before Moylette, who was landing most of the cleaner shots throughout, claimed the final round and victory.

Ward secured a classy win over Imre Szello of Hungary in their light-heavyweight (81kg) bout.

The pair looked evenly matched during the first round, with Ward happy to keep his guard up and throw the occasional right hook.

But the Moate BC man gradually established himself from there and finished with a confident final round performance, which including a warning from the referee for gesturing at his opponent to come forward.

He landed most of the solid shots, some of which staggered Szello, and rarely looked troubled, eventually winning 18-8.

Moylette will meet England's Thomas Stalker in Friday's final.

Liverpool native Stalker. a silver medal winner at the 2010 European Championships and the current Commonwealth champion, received a walkover over Italy's Vincenzo Mangiacapre today. It is understood that Maniacarpe was injured.

Both 21-year-old Moylette and Stalker have moved up one notch from lightweight to light-welterweight in the last two years.

Ward will face Nikita Ivanov of Russia in the final.

June 23rd (semi-finals)
64Kg: Ray Moylette (St Anne's) beat Hajiliyev Heybatulla (Azerbaijan) 18-16
64Kg: Thomas Stalker (England) beat Vincenzo Mangiacapre (Italy) W/O

Great performance, Stalker was throwing nothing but arm punches and Moylette soaked it all up and sickened him with big shot after big shot. Looks a very good prospect.

Any idea what time Ward is on at?? Fight no8. I think he's another very exciting prospect. At 17 and with less than 10 senior fights he already has a great resume.
