So you think that the feral youth that have been rioting the last few days were upstanding members of the community 18 months ago, do you imagine they were all in jobs and staring down the barrel of glittering careers in the City? What has happened in the last few days is complete criminality and would/could have happened under any government
We all know that the people responsible are criminals and opportunists and there is no sense in it all. But look at how they see there futures and look at the arrogance of the London Mayor and Prime Minister who had to be dragged back from Tuscany on his 3rd holiday jaunt in months. The PM walked around Croydon today and met and talked to police and the fire brigade but avoided local people for fear of a heckling because of the way his governments cuts have inflicted such despair in local communities. Did you see Boris Johnson today in Clapham Junction he was getting a right ear full and stumbled and blabbered his way through questions. No resurrances no apolgises for the poor policing in that area last night and no way of reassuring residents that the same wasn't going to happen tonight. The Condems must be accountable for the way there policies have destroyed communties. Clegg got a ear full too and there is no public confidence in them.

I acknowledge your point lemon,
But I don't think planting a tree erases a drunken mother and a father than sporadically turns up and slaps her about, before clearing off out to sell weed and sit in the social club all day.
Monkey see, Monkey do.
If they see swearing, violence, complete disregards for anything and anyone from their family and peers - then they've got no chance. And then when their idols rap about facebook and knocking people out, "brap brap brap" and all that cack that glorifies it then that's just the cherry on the cake.
If they can't play football or rap, they're fooked.
I fully acknowledge your point too Red, and I believe that they complement each other... It just goes to show that a holistic approach is the only way that these things will no longer fester in our society... Kids need good role models to learn from, and they also need to feel connected to something greater than themselves, plus a sense of autonomy over their own decisions...

Hoover is right. What's happening now is nothing, absolutely nothing to do with a government who's not long in power. These are criminals of varying levels setting out about wreaking havoc and on a crime spree. It's not lashing out against a system. They are destroying ordinary, good people's businesses, their livelyhoods, their cars and terrorising the innocent. There's no justification, none! There are countless people out there, living in poverty, that aren't stealing and torching everything in sight. They have morals and are good people. A government, even if their policies are wrong and alienate sections of society, don't create scumbags of this level. They're bred by their families and the people they associate with. If the government had built them a community centre with lovely facilites 18 months ago they'd be burning it to the ground as we speak.

There are coutless examples in all communities of people who give their lives to help those less fortunate, those who give their lives up for the protection of others. As for giving kids autonomy in their own decisions that only works to a certain extent. Too little freedom leads to resentment but too much leads to not having a sense of purpose or responsibility. The people out there causing havoc and fear have a choice. Their current free decisions are not the correct ones and are only self serving. Their right to make any decisions at all need to be taken away from them and they need to be in jail. Then hopefully they will realise the value of making the right decisions and how lucky they had been to be free to make the right decisions all along. They just chose not to.

Yes, but these examples need to be within the context of an overall integrated holistic approach for society to have any chance of improvement... Yes, you're right about the fact that these youths need to be put in prison to pay for their actions, but I'm talking about addressing this issue at a grass roots level, from very early on...the problem with our society is that we just let this slip until it's too late... Your point about making choices and the consequences of those choices is the point that I'm trying to make...from an early age, these kids need to be made aware of the choices that they can make, and getting them to own these choices from an early age will set them up well for later in life...of course, there must be boundaries set for their own safety, but kids need to be given a sense of autonomy.... The likes of Richard Wiseman, Daniel Pink and Marshall Rosenberg et al break it down better than I ever could...simply, when people are able to buy into their own choices, they are more likely to respect and cultivate them...

I don't see how anybody can lay this at the feet of the incumbent Government. I bet half these little rats running round smashing shops up don't know who the Prime Minister is.
This is a seed that has been sown for decades, a vicious cycle of unfit parents, a lack of role models for children has led to a whole generation who believe in nothing and understand nothing.
I'm sat watching TV now stunned and I don't know how you begin to sort this mess out. The only thing I can think of is that there are good people out there - people with morals, people who try and do the right thing - they have to stand up and be counted.

The police need to use major force on these Scumbags.Anyone out with a hud up or mask on crack them across the head and if some of them die in the process so be it.These people are just filth and need to be dealt with.

The time for addressing all of these fundamental issues is tomorrow. Today is about dealing with human vermin in a zero tolerance high impact fashion. Why it's happened is not something a good frontline copper should be concerned with. He needs to know that truncheoning the wannabe gangsta waving a knife at him is not gonna lose him his job.

I think that they BOTH need to be addressed today through a two-pronged approach i.e. let the Police deal with the current situation, and parents / teachers / community leaders deal with the grass roots problem on a holistic level, otherwise we'll just end up with a never ending fire fighting approach, tomorrow is too late...

Anyone that thinks these fookin scumbags have any political agenda are comepletely fookin deluded. These people have no idea why they are doing what they are doing, they have been told to do it from thier 'mates' on facebook, twitter, bb messanger etc... Nothing to do with the government, certainly not the current government, this is the affect of generations of cnuts living off others. Kill all the cnuts, burn them and Piss on the ashes. These are only a drain on society by just being alive, let alone when they start fooking up the place and looting. Opening fire on these and slaying every last one of the cnuts would go a huge way to tackling the economic climate and creating a better Britain for everyone. I would put money on 99% of these scum bags not having any means to support themselves other than criminality.
