to be fair to nigel benn at that point he never knew the severity of what would play out.
You mean honest, right? Wouldn't most people think that? We can all pretend to be noble, but given a choice between us and an opponent, would you say you want the serious injury on their behalf? I doubt it. You also have to put the quote in context. Going into the fight, McClellan was saying he wanted to kill Benn in the ring. It was quite vicious sentiment before things went down. Benn could have been more diplomatic in what he said, and gone on about how it was a tragedy and you wouldn't wish it on anyone etc, but that's not Nigel Benn. styledoctor: I disagree with you. I thought McGuigan was spot on. When there's been a fight as savage as that, and the guy was in obvious discomfort, there's no shame in taking a knee. What should a fighter do? Continue to suffer just so you can say you got your money's worth, when you already had it and more?

Not sure how old you are - whether you watched the fight live. The point being that McClellan was a bully in the ring. When the going got tough, could he grit it out as well as dish it out. Taking a knee and sitting out the count of 10 is not typically how warriors lose. I defy anyone watching live to be able to have diagnosed a major problem with McClellan. Blinking? Mouthpiece hanging out? Crikey, you do know he's being punched by Nigel Benn, that's not a normal situation. That's my issue with what McGuigan said. It looked like G-Man had quit. Hard to say but true. That's what it looked like. If you did watch the fight live I guarantee you NOBODY would have said "fair play Gerald, you've taken enough, time to call it a night". Would anyone have said it knowing what they know, of course not. For Barry to attack commentators for what they said in the heat of the moment was ridiculous and uncalled for. Not sure we are even at odds here charlie - because I do agree there is no shame. But McGuigan was specific that the commentators were out of order (easy to say now), when they were accurately describing the momentous events played out in real-time. Not the same benefit Barry had of taking stock in a studio and composing himself, able to consider all eventualities.

Good post. I totally agree. Barry is a conniving little pirate. The fight doctor called it as Watt did on the US broadcast, as I myself did, as the five or six people sat beside me did. How many years has the leprechaun known Watt, how many broadcasts have they worked together over the years. It was a diabolical call on two accounts. One, Barry M was simply wrong, two, it was a despicable and damning judgement of a colleague. Mcguigan is a mouthy little bastard with very big hands, he takes over any panel with his inane chatter and never lets any other poor sod get a word in. He was predictably intolerable on the recent Khan fight, pulling up Nelson with his puritanical drivel. Execute the verbose little mongoose, at Loftus road, the scene of his greatest and only triumph.

God bless Gerald McClellan its guys like Gerald who pick you up on the bad days and makes you realise just how lucky you are that you can see and your brain functions properly. Himself and his sisters must be so strong.
