100 hours a week? What job do you do?

Sales engineer for a national security firm. Looked after Rolls Royce military, RAF camps, Nuclear facilities.

We had a design team, but the jobs I worked on were too important so I'd often spend just as long checking and changing their work that it was quicker to design it all up myself from scratch, especially as i was the one who surveyed the place.

I couldn't afford any time to remedy mishaps or design mistakes once the installation team began on site. Often I would end up project managing the job too, telling engineers how it should be done, chairing site meetings and even chasing outstanding monies from customers and then ensuring subcontractors and suppliers were paid on time.

Unfortunately national companies have a lot of useless twats, who dont help and just use red tape and company politics to avoid doing any work.

One morning I rang a project engineer from site for a quick answer to a query, left a voice mail. Then I rang his secretary who said he was "outside the office at the sandwich van" then I left another missed called 15 minutes later. I needed him to source me an answer from our estimating software.

I rang again and again. Then called his secretary again and she told him I needed to speak to him. He shouted back "It's nearly noon so Im on my lunch hour." I told her that I needed one simple question answering - he said "Too busy, ring at 1pm"

I apologised to the client, said I'd be back in about an hour.

I jumped into my car, drove the 20 miles from Derby back to the office, handbraked right outside the front door - walked into the engineering office and shouted at the top of my voice "Your a fat useless lazy f***ing prick and if you want to step outside after 5pm I will knock you the eff out" - the whole office gasped lol.

"You cant talk to me like that!! Im ringing HR" - i replied "your on your effing break you useless tw*t , which I add the company does not pay you for."

The General manager came in, who to be honest always sided with me and took me outside to cool off. I told him that it was getting too much, that im normally professional - but these jokers roll in at 8.30am and I'd been in the office since 6.30am and weren't leaving until 6.30pm without a lunch break - and going home and working, even had my own key to play catch-up on a Saturday and then I'd be taking clients to football or paintballing on a Sunday and effectively was working round the clock 7 days a week.

I think if i was doing the same hours but stacking shelves, i'd have not been too far behind from earning what I did.

Behind every workaholic, there are a string of broken marriages, kids who hate their father - and maybe a big 7-series BMW driven by a guy who looks much older than his true age.

Simply not worth it if the home/work balance is swung the wrong way.

PS- all the useless tw*ts are still there, doing the bare minimum, taking their breaks and letting everyone else take the workload. They get away with it because it's a national company.

Like Red has said, if you're on the bonus you've absolutely got to work for it.

I drive 40 miles to be at my desk for 7.30 every morning, lunch is a butty grabbed at my desk and the earliest I leave is 5.30-5.45. Once a week I'm there till 7 and my laptop comes home with me along with 5-10 files every night.

I have a 3 year old and my rule is that when I get home the phone and laptop are switched off till he goes to bed at 8.30 and I only work at weekends when he has a nap. Those on here who know me will tell you I've been a right boring twat since May to get where I am now because it's my first year.

Anybody could do what I do, you just need to be organised, communicate and be a grafter. Wanting to do it is half the battle.

Lol had a little giggle there. Not at you but because i know exactly what you mean.

it's good you eased back mate for yourself and your family. More to life than just working and you need that balance to be happy. i'm all for working hard but work smart at the same time.

I manage engineers as well and it can be like getting blood out of a stone sometimes. I had a problem once where an engineer was fiddling his time on the job sheets. Putting 4 hours down for a simple air con adjustment. When i pulled him about it I asked him if he was completely retarded as I am the one who writes up his job sheets. He is no longer with the company  Grin during those 4 hours he was sneaking off site doing personal stuff. That really pissed me off because 15 engineers got made redundant last year and he was lucky enough to keep his job. Proper Piss take. I don't have a background in engineering but i know how to crisis manage and that's what i get paid for. Some of them think because i don't have a degree in this area that i am stupid. However on top of crisis management i'm responsible for managing client expectations as well. In other words i can bullshit better than most people so i know when i'm being bullshitted  Grin

But yeah 100 hours a week? You would have done yourself some damage in the long term.

I've just finished for the day now to give you an idea.

Lad went to bed at 8.30, I had a quick shower and shave and I then did a quick couple of hours whilst the Mrs watched One Born Every Minute.

Hard Work!!!! Dedication!!!!

As has been said though, it's his first year. So you've gotta get your head down and get some serious work done.

Hopefully it will calm down when he becomes more established in the firm he's in.

All your hard work is to be admired, Socrates, well done. I hope it calms down soon though so you don't wear yourself down and manage to spend some quality time to watch your kid grow up Cool

I used to do 65 hour weeks when I was 21 up to around 24. 26 now and doing the 9-5 36.5 hour job in the groups biggest hospital in our group. TBH I still actually miss the long days, it still feels strange going home and having time to do things. ALthough I don't have any kids to occupy me

All the reasons I never did it and probably never will  Grin  I sacked off going to the City after Law School because I didn't fancy being ridden like a Blackpool donkey for most of my 20's.

But to be fair I'm a lazy sod without much in the way of ambition.  I get to work around 8.30am, rarely miss lunch and am out the door by 5.15pm most days with a 10 minute walk to work.  Never work evenings or weekend and pretty much just coast through the week.  I still do pretty well for myself but I'm lucky that I've smashed the odd huge case of of the park every now and then to keep me in good grace.

No of course not.

However i look it at this way. Am i comfortable on my current salary and living conditions. Yes I am.

Am I happy. Yes I am: I do my job to the best of my ability but i forget about it when i leave and enjoy my life. I bought my first house last year so i'm doing ok.

My point is i have a good work life balance. Money doesn't get you everything. As long as you can pay the bills and put food on the table you're doing ok and anything else is a bonus.

For me i will not sacrifice seeing my family and friends. That is too important and that is what enriches me life. Not how much money i make.

I'm the devil - I'm a personal injury lawyer.

I hear you on work life balance but I love my job. My Mrs works 3 days a week so gets time with the boy, I get 2 hours of quality time every day with him plus I don't smash the ale as much at weekend as I used to.

I used to do more boxing trips but that will start again come May. The biggest thing is getting up early and getting in - everyone in my house is asleep when I set off which is hard at winter - but I'd only be asleep otherwise anyway.
