Depends on the firmware version mate, unlocking tends to be alot bigger pain in the arse than jailbreaking, but if youve got a local market stall that sells cases ect they will usually do this sort of thing for you pretty cheaply. Just dont update your firmware once its done or youll lose the unlock.

You can buy something off eBay called a gevey sim which is one way of doing it, but honestly in my experience and the hassle I had taking up the challenge on someone else's phone if take it to the market if it wasn't to expensive Ie. 10-20 quid

much as I know.   Was locked to orange but needed vodafone network  no problems since
its been done.

Go in iTunes and when your phones plugged in right click on your phone in the left pane, click transfer purchases then right click again and then back up.

Redsn0w is just a small program what you actually use to jailbreak your phone and it has a couple of other features too. Its the baseband on your phone that keeps it locked to a network, but on the newer versions of ios apple have made it so u can't change it, so what needs doing is your phone needs downgrading to an old software, then baseband unlocking, then it will need updating but with a custom firmware so that you don't lock your baseband again. It's not as complicated as it sounds, but the hard part will be downgrading, usually to downgrade you have to have something called 'shsh' files saved off of your phone before you upgrade so without them I'm not sure. If I were you mate for 20 quid I'd take it to the market, just remember not to update your firmware on your phone when it's done or you'll be back to square one.
