Duncan Bannatyne as lost almost £300 million of his wealth this year. He as reported to have a combined wealth of £85 million and his business is meant to be in real problems. The health industry is so saturated with competition that you can get off peak memberships for less than £20 a month. Ray Hatton will do well to make a success out of it

I think Ray has the right idea a membership on any decent gyms round here is about £45 a month there is a mark for affordable fitness as has been pointed out with Bannatynes recent results.

Charging £10.99 a month as a special introductory rate is a good incentive but how long can he sustain the small charge. I know Wigan is a saturated area with the bigger names like DW, Fitness First and Total Fitness all operating close to the Town Centre and about another 40 smaller independent gyms are within a 3 mile radius.
A Health club like Bannatynes would have no chance round here because more Gym's are opening swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms as part of extending there facilities. I build steam rooms for a living the orders are flying in for them. Ray will do well to make a success of it I know a few gym owners over the years who have done well and as soon as they build up a real business one of the big boys will come in and build a gym twice as big and pinch all the clientele. I know Duncan Bannatyne scaled his business on employing sales people to go to every town in the UK to do surveys and carry out research in how many gyms are in every town per population and if he can see a gap he is in there under cutting the small names.

You make great points Tito but were back in recession and one of the first things to get cut is gym membership these guys from what I've picked up on seem to be doing ok http://www.thegymgroup.com/ If Ray went this way I reckon there is a market there.

Just had a look at that webiste it looks very good. You don't see many gyms open 24hrs a day but they seem to be working it well and are opening more sites by the looks of it. They don't seem to have many in the North apart from the major cities like Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool.
£15.99 a month is very good value for a Gym of that quality but I am surprised that the minimum age requirement is 18 years old.

Virgin have opened about 25 new gyms and refurbing plenty of existing.

People won't cut their training.

Only casual slobs who go for a sweat and a sauna on a Sunday after 10 mins on the treadmill, will be packing in the gym, as it's eating into their take away budgets.

I think that is quite unfair. A lot of people have had to take wage freezes and with the soaring cost of living a Gym membership is a luxury compared to a necessary. When your tied into complicated and lengthy contracts like the ones Bannatynes have people are reluctant to extend there membership with so much uncertainty.

Your missing my point a little bit,

What I'm trying to illustrate is I know dedicated gym users - and they'd rather the gas and electric get disconnected than their gym sesh get cancelled.

All it does is weed-out the casual / sociable gym users who don't use it religiously.

The industry is very much alive and well.
