We have a vote in Birmingham on Thursday to decide if we want to have a Mayor, I am a little ignorant to what their role is, how much influence they have and whether they are of benefit, any Londoners have an opinion either way?

My current default setting is to vote no

It's always gonna be very much a matter of personal choice, and one very much of predilection towards history and ancient custom.  The mayor (as opposed to the bloomin' Town Crier) is basically the highest ranking officer of a municipal government in any town or city.  Very much these days a figurehead for ceremonial purposes and one who may be called upon to foster good relations with other visiting dignitories, etc.  It is also an office conferred in modern times as a local distinction for long service to the Council.  Historically the Mayor has been expected to devote much of his (or her) time to civic, ceremonial, and representational functions, and to preside over meetings for the advancement of the public welfare. His or her administrative duties are to act as returning officer at parliamentary elections, and as chairman of the meetings of the council. However, since reforms introduced in 2000, 14 English local authorities have directly-elected mayors who combine the 'civic' mayor role with that of Leader of the Council and have significantly greater powers than either.
You can either look upon it as a useful local diplomat, or a waste of time in this day and age.  The choice is yours, and opinions will always vary.  I'm of the older generation and would support the concept, chiefly for sentimental reasons.

I understand your opinion, Dave, but that's democracy for you.  It's not the perfect system, but possibly the best of the imperfect ones?

NO!

They cost a fortune, our local mayors office has two secretaries, two cars (both with personalised reg plates, 'The 1' and 'The 2') and two chauffeurs. They have no power they are just a figure head of local council.

18th May they have a 5 course banquet for 'Mayor Making' where the new mayor is placed into power, but they also name the mayor elect and the outgoing mayor fills the role of deputy mayor!

I used to regularly help out a mate of mine who was the Chef in the local town hall, his job was to basically feed the mayor and the elected members, needless to say i could tell you some cracking stories!

The money wasted on entertaining and wining and dining people was astronomical!

Apologies

From my very basic knowledge though, aren't elected mayors just council leaders with a robe on?

If so, the point still stands as far as i can see it, waste of tax payers money!

Well this is what I am trying to find out, I suspect the elected mayor holds considerably more power, AKA Boris in London, I agree though again, all pomp and bollocks a the tax payers expense, I will be voting no!
