#keeping this all in one thread so read on for the latest news!!!#

Did anyone catch this. Started watching a repeat earlier, only saw the first bout but it was a brilliant fight.

The competition is between franchises with teams consisting of the worlds top amateurs. The finals were fought across 10 weights and the bouts are 7x3s scored on 10 point must system, and the boxers don't wear headguards.

I must admit I am very sceptical of the whole AIBA Professional Boxing idea but the first bout was absolutely brilliant.

Repeated often on 456, next repeat is 1130 tonight

As it stands there is a strong chance there will be a British franchise in the WSB this time around. Be fascinating to see who is involved

Just to update there will definitely be a London team in this years WSB. At present the two biggest names involved are Andrew Selby and Anthony Fowler.

Selby got to the quarter finals of the Olympics and Anthony Fowler, who was unlucky to miss out to Fred Evans as the 69kg rep at 2012, had a phenomenal season 2011-12 winning countless medals at european and world level.

There are also several Irish amateurs mooted to be involved. If I hear anything will let you know.

Yeah I think he has been mentioned. Should be a cracking competition. John Joe Nevin turned down Amir Khan to take part and Joe Ward will be in there as well.

There will an event in London at some point next year so I'll be trying to get to that hopefully.

Boxing : London 2012 Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin has ditched plans to forge a professional career under the guidance of Amir Khan and signed up for the amateur World Series of Boxing (WSB) Team Championships.

The Mullingar man will join Ireland’s current European champion Joe Ward in the British Lionhearts squad announced today at the WSB launch in London.

Former Irish Olympian and WBA champion Barry McGuigan hosted the launch and said he expects great things from the pair.

“Joe Ward will be a sensation in the World Series of Boxing as he’s an awesome talent. He’ll box at 85kg and that will suit him down to the ground as he’s moving up toward heavyweight all the time," said McGuigan.

“I believe Joe could win it out, he’s that good. John is also an exceptional talent as we saw from his performances at the Olympic Games. They are dynamite additions to any team.”

Nevin announced on national television last month that he would be turning pro with Khan’s stable but it is understood the Irish Elite champion did not sign a contract with the 2004 Olympic silver medallist.

Ward (19) was prevented from signing with Milan in the WSB two years because he was a year shy of the minimum age.

“I’m looking forward to the extra rounds as there are five rounds in the World Series,” he said today. “It will be a great challenge for me and I can’t wait to get started.

“I think I will be making my debut against Italy in Wales this month. I was disappointed that I couldn’t box in the World Series two years ago but I’m ready to go now.”

Irish coach Eddie Bolger will work with the Moate BC member in the WSB.

The USA Knockouts, including Ireland’s 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Michael Conlan and Seán Turner, are first up for The Lionhearts next week.

The WSB is run by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and allows amateur boxers fight under pro rules, earn salaries and bonuses, while retaining their Olympic status.

The Lionhearts and the USA are joined in Group B by Italy, Germany, Kazakhstan, Ukraine. Group A consists of Mexico, Azerbaijan, India, Poland, Argentina and Russia.

Yeah he's a special boy. Remember when he burst through and shifted Kenny Egan.

Welsh Devil Rob just announced on the spam fb page that fred evans and joe cordina will also be in the squad.

So that makes:

Anthony Fowler
Charlie Edwards

Sean McGoldrick
Andrew Selby
Joe Cordina
Fred Evans

John Joe Nevin
Joe Ward
Michael Conlan

I think there are question marks over josh taylor and tom stalker as they weigh up their options. If I've missed anyone please shout.

Great win for the Lionhearts and for Fowler.  Looks like a really strong team.

The USA should be docked a point just for calling themselves the Knockouts.  I think that's actually worse than Russia just being called Russia.

http://www.worldseriesboxing.com/index.php/news/135-lionhearts-in-convincing-away-win-over-knockouts-1-4

British Lionhearts record debut WSB victory as Cordina, Fowler, Fa and McGoldrick all triumph in 4:1 away win over USA Knockouts at ‘The Hanger’ in Orange County, California.

Many pundits are expecting the British Franchise to take the WSB by storm in their debut season, such is the strength in-depth of talent at their disposal. With a coaching set-up that is the envy of the world, the Lionhearts are well equipped to make their mark in the extremely tough Group B. They faced the first real test of their metal against the USA Knockouts.

The first bout of the evening saw the Lightweight (61kg) showdown between the USA Knockouts’ resident Texan Eric ‘Fearless’ Fowler and 20-year-old Welshman Joseph Cordina. The American southpaw tried to use his experience against his taller opponent in the early exchanges but Cordina’s measured approach and shot selection throughout the five rounds ensured the British Lionhearts got the first win on the board.

The next fight had up and coming Marquis Moore battling two-time British Champion Anthony Fowler at Middleweight (73kg). The good, quick and snappy punches of the Lionhearts’ Fowler quickly had him in the ascendency with once again the British boxer having a big height and reach advantage. The contest was over in the second round after a stunning left hand followed by a devastating overhand right sent Moore crashing to the canvas, Fowler winning by KO, 2-0 to the visitors.

Fowler declared afterwards, “He was rolling a lot so I knew that if I put my weight behind my big right hand, he would eventually walk into it. I had to keep my composure, I listened to my coaches, it was a great way to win”.

Fan favourite Kennedy Katende, now representing USA Knockouts after two seasons with Mexico Guerreros, faced Zlatko Ledic in the evening’s Light Heavyweight (85kg) bout. Quick and agile, Katende’s movement and the accuracy of his punches had the tall Ledic on the back foot throughout the first four rounds. In the fifth, Katende, sensing blood, turned on the style, unloading a huge left hand that sent his rival sprawling on the canvas. Ledic tried to continue but the after getting up was subject to another barrage of punches and the referee stepped in to stop the contest, Katende reducing his team’s deficit in the tie with a KO of his own.

“When I get in the ring, I am in for the show. I always want to put on a show”, beamed Katende after the fight.

The British Lionhearts’ Uaine Fa from Tonga was up next in the Heavyweight (91+kg) match-up, using his jab to good effect as he grew into his fight against the orthodox American Avery Gibson. Fa’s height advantage and calculating approach saw him not only extend his unbeaten WSB record to four wins but also ensured the overall victory for his team.

The Bantamweight (54kg) bout was on last with Commonwealth Games gold medallist and burgeoning talent Sean McGoldrick making his first foray in the pro ranks against experienced campaigner Braulio Avila Juarez of the USA Knockouts. This was real test of 20-year-old McGoldrick’s credentials at this level as he faced a Mexican fighter with ten fights over two WSB seasons under his belt. It was an entertaining and strategic battle between two polished performers. The positive Welshman’s speed and clever combination punches saw him just edge it to win by split decision and give the Lionhearts a convincing 4:1 victory in their first match in WSB.

“My constant pressure got to him in the later rounds. My jab was very effective. The advice of the coaches was spot on. I felt a lot fitter. He is a class fighter (Avila) but I just did my thing”, said McGoldrick after the victory.

Lee Pullen from the British Lionhearts’ coaching team said: “It was a very good night for the team. The boxers adapted superbly to the different demands of WSB and we were very happy with their performances and the result”.

The first British Lionhearts home match will be against Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Wales, on Friday 23rd November 2012. Olympic silver medallists Fred Evans and John Joe Nevin will box alongside Andrew Selby.

USA Knockouts now travel to the ‘Daulet Sports Complex’ to lock horns with the impressive unit Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.
