The WBC Supreme Board of Governors held a meeting in Mexico to review the disciplinary actions imposed on heavyweight Dereck Chisora. Chisora didn’t attend the hearing nor communicated with the WBC. The reason of the hearing was to speak about Chisora’s behavior before and after his bout against Vitali Klitschko last February 18 in Germany. Chisora has been fined and suspended from participating in WBC fights until he completes a medical anger management program.

Chisora Camp Response: “The response of the WBC is heavy-handed and inconsistent with the approach they have taken over other fighters. The WBC did not take away Floyd Mayweather Jnr’s belt after he pleaded guilty to beating his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his children. He retained his welterweight title and the WBC went on allow him to fight for a WBC belt against Miguel Cotto on 5 May, his sentence for the crime being put back to allow him to do so.”

The response also stated:

“We are not surprised by this decision and expected Dereck to be heavily sanctioned by the WBC because the Chairman of the British Boxing Board of Control, Charles Giles, is also the Vice-President of the World Boxing Council (and the Vice-Chairman of the EBU).

“Despite the WBC confirming, through its lawyer, that Dereck’s hearing would be in London it was listed on short notice for 7 June 2012 in Mexico City. Dereck could not attend as he is in training for his fight against David Haye and because he needed a visa which he could not have got in time. Dereck was keen to attend the hearing, not least because he wanted the opportunity to cross-examine Mr Charles Giles about his conduct in Munich, who whilst available at the hearing before the BBBofC, refused to give evidence. We informed the WBC of this and asked them to put back the hearing by a few weeks but they refused to do so and so Dereck will consider appealing after the West Ham fight.”

I remember years ago when I first started watching Boxing and Don King was really the man who controlled Boxing. He had the WBC in his pocket and had a stranglehold over the sport which meant he got away with putting fighters in long contracts and reigning on purses he was contractually obliged to honour.
Fast forward 20 years with King barely a distant memory and Boxing as become a cesspit for greed, cheats and corruption. The WBC have more faces than a town hall clock, fighters no longer want to fight the best out there and whether its hand wraps or drug cheat allegations its just one long sorry story leading to the gutter.

Remember it well Tyson bitting Holyfields ear and the scoring in the first Lewis Vs Holyfield fight brought about his down fall but your right his strangle hold on the sport and what he said went was pretty clear a good few fighters never got there money from him.

For all of Kings faults which were there many he never passed up the opportunity to make great fights. I remember he staged 6 world title fights on one card twice in a year. He as been responsible for making the biggest fights in the history of the sport Thrilla in Manila, Rumble in the Jungle, Trinidad - De La Hoya, Chavez - Haugen/Whitaker, Tyson - Spinks, Leonard - Duran and many many more huge fights. He as probably been at both ends of the spectrum the good and the bad but at least he as contributed so much and as never been so hypocritical unlike others who just have a vested interest in there own companies.

The WBC make up their rules as they go along, everybody knows this by now. They are continuing to make what happened four months ago disproportionate.

He used to be able to walk out the the winner by contractually owning the rights to them as part of the terms of the fight.  These days it is tough to get 2 elite fighters under the same promotional brand, the legal side of the sport and the ability of top boxers to be able to control their own destiny is much better now, but the result is that promoters don't want to risk their cash cows and the more independent top fighters can earn high money fighting mismatches because they get such a large piece of the pie.

Remember when PPV used to be for the really exclusive big fights?  Now PPV is standard for anybody with brand recognition.

I have said many times that Mike Tyson should never have been allowed to box again after the ear biting episode, which was the most disgraceful thing I've ever seen in a boxing ring in my lifetime. BUT he could still make people money, and so it was overlooked.  The biggest disgrace ever.  Chisora is pretty much from the same mold.  But boxing has descended into the gutter and panders to the Jeremy Kyle culture with pointless spectacles like the upcoming fight with Haye.  Cos it makes money, and that's all that matters apparently.  Whilst other promising upcoming boxers work their bollox off and cannot get fights.  It's the pits these days, and that's a fact.   Angry

...AND THE NEW!!!

yet more reasons as to why i completely disregard any alphabet belts,

belts mean shit all, its all about quality of opposition. although naturally its hard to judge quality of opposition without some sort of rankings.

boxing is getting battered atm,

controversial hypocrtical governing bodies, loads of PED scandles for high profile fighters, Big fights not getting made, Horrendous judging decisions, 1 of the no.1 p4p guys is in prison for beating a woman, the other is a religious nut who makes controversial comments about gay people despite not exactly having the best track record to make a morale judgement on anyone.

yep, i'd say the boxing world is probably in crisis right now. Even the most ardent hardcore fans are losing some of their fevour for the sport, theres only so much you can see before you begin to turn away
