Tales from the 5th Street Gym: Ali, the Dundees, and Miami's Golden Age of Boxing (Hardcover) Ferdie Pacheco (Mar 2010)

In its forty-year existence, the 5th Street Gym housed the training grounds for three of the greatest fighters the sport has ever known - Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Sugar Ray Leonard - and became the locus for a grand total of fourteen world champions. The site was also a magnet for a wide range of international celebrities including Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jackie Gleason, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and Sylvester Stallone, who were all absorbed into the gym's legend. The 5th Street Gym's beginnings trace back to 1950, when Chris Dundee, along with his brother Angelo, began promoting big-time boxing at Miami Beach. "Tales from The 5th Street Gym" includes a wealth of never-before-seen photographs and is the first to chronicle the fascinating history of the 5th Street Gym from one of its insiders - Dr. Ferdie Pacheco - with crucial contributions from Tom Archdeacon, Angelo Dundee, Suzanne Dundee Bonner, Enrique Encinosa, Howard Kleinberg, Ramiro Ortiz, Edwin Pope, Bob Sheridan, and Budd Schulberg. Discover the secret history of one of boxing's most hallowed grounds, as Pacheco recalls the rise, heyday, and fall of the 'sweet science' at Miami Beach.

Just seen this list of boxing books recommended by Thomas Hauser, not all new but includes some not previously mentioned on this thread.

Anyone know whats Oscars books like ?

Had it for christmas and finished it boxing day night so very, very readable. Oscar's very open and honest, talks about how his love for the sport and how he became aware of the money issues after getting done over early in his career and ended up starting GBP. Top read

Off the Ropes: the Ron Lyle Story (Paperback)
by Candace Toft (Author)  6/10

"How do we reconcile this soft-spoken, gentle man with the `toughest heavyweight who never won the title?"

In a life as tough and brutal as his bouts, Ron Lyle had already served hard time for second degree murder before he started his amateur boxing career. Afterwards, he was the supposedly third-rate fighter who had Muhammad Ali beat for ten rounds in the title bout; the guy who fought George Foreman in a brawl with four knockdowns, known in boxing lore as `The One For the Ages'; and the guy who was arrested for murder a second time.

Off the Ropes: The Ron Lyle Story not only explores the era of the greatest heavyweights in world boxing history, it tells an equally compelling personal tale. Ron Lyle grew up in the Denver projects, one of nineteen children in a religious family. Aged 20, he was convicted for a disputed gang killing and served several years in the state penitentiary, where he learned to box before he was paroled in 1969. After a meteoric amateur career and an executive pardon, he turned pro in 1971 and over the next six years established an outstanding record in the ring.

Then, in 1978, Lyle was indicted for murder a second time and, even though he was acquitted, his career was effectively over. The years that followed were filled with struggle, a captivating love story and ultimate redemption. Today, he runs a youth center in Denver that bears his name.

Off the Ropes: The Ron Lyle Story is the poignant, uplifting biography of a singular man.

Yep. Recommendable. It's fiction though but written by a former coach (or so).

have to disagree with you there , It was ok but not enough information on the nitty gritty . Nothing to write home about .
