Less than half a million watch England match

Sunday, 11 October 2009 15:56

Fewer than half a million people watched England's first game to be broadcast exclusively live over the internet and no detailed viewing figures will be released, the firms behind the move said today.

Fans who paid between £5 and £12 to watch the match online complained about the lack of atmosphere, slow streaming speeds and the lack of licensed premises showing the game.
But international football agency Kentaro and media group Perform insisted there were 'no technical issues'.

The firms described the number of viewers as 'close to half a million' but this includes figures for the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), which screened the game free for troops, as well as those who watched it in cinemas and online.

Was that a one off test game, to see how people would take to it, because you'd qualified anyway? I think the people have spoken.

I don't know mate. How do they know how many people are sitting around a tv to watch Eastenders or whatever? How were they showing it in the pubs?  Normal stream through a projector?

Good - i'm glad people have boycotted it. I have been all over Europe watching England play, I love my football but this was a step too far for me. I wouldn't even watch the highlights because the money men are takin the you know what - same with most sports - I havne't watched a single sporting event on the t'interweb.

Does he declare the 10 DVD payment to the tax man, that would make an interesting read

It was shown free in poland or somewhere, if you have one of those dishes that picks up all those channels you got the game

This was a disgrace. It should be a law that every game England play is shown on terrestrial tv! It is an absolute joke that it is on tv in other countries but not in England, ridiculous! It was on in a local pub but we shouldn't have to watch it through a foreign channel.

It was shown all over Europe on TV live. Just not broadcasted on a UK based channel.

Wasnt worth a watch anyhow.

ALL National games of this magnitude, (FOOTBALL, RUGBY, TENNIS, ETC) should be shown on the respective home nations terestrial TV......in an ideal world.

End of the day, money rules...not the opinion of the working man wanting a few pints i nthe local with his mates watching his country play.

Like Dave i am glad no-one shelled out on this, lets hope that this is the first and last time they try and rip us, the general public, off on this kind of thing.

ALL England games should be shown live on the BBC. simple as.

I did read that it was the Ukranians that sold the rights to that company. I don't know exactly what the FIFA rules are on the home country selling the rights to the away nation but apparently it had originally been sold to Setanta who folded. None of the UK tv channels would pay the asking price to show it so it went to Kentaro.

They tried something similar over here a few years back but the government effectively tore up the contract the FAI had signed with Sky and immediately put a list of sporting events that must be shown on terrestrial Irish tv into legislation. So now he have the rights to everything but friendlies.
