Can people suggest places to go on holiday for new year? A few of us fancy going away on boxing day, and coming back early Jan, so a week really, somewhere hot and cheapish?

Thinking of somewhere in Europe really. I work in travel but it's only business travel/long haul with scheduled airlines that I book, and I have never been involved in the leisure side of the market/charter flights, so I'm not sure what European destinations people go to in December..

Doesn't Hatton go to Tenerife at Christmas? Something like that really. We were thinking of getting a villa if there is a few of us.. Somewhere with a pool, near a beach, decent temperature, and decent nightlife..

I guess £500 would be a ballpark figure to spend..

Tenerife is OK but I wouldnt call it hot, if you could stretch your budget to 800 and your days to 14 you could do Thailand, I went to do a thai box camp 3 years ago fo 3 weeks, the flights were 400 if you book in advance and the hotels are a pitance, you can eat for a fiver a day

Yep only chance of decent weather in Europe  Chris is the Canary Islands.
Can't think of any other destinations that would give you a cheapish holiday with sun at that time of year.
Still a gamble on the weather,  I have been to Tenerife in March, Arpil & late Nov  and it was hot,  not scorching but pool weather each time.
If you don't mind self catering apartments you should be able to do it for under £400.

I've sent my boss and his family to Thailand over Christmas in the past, but you need to book the flights a year in advance really to get the best deals, plus the air fares are nearly double what they cost at any other time of the year anyway, so I doubt that will be an option. Would be perfect though! Just a shame it would cost double the proposed budget! My boss ended up paying about a grand per person just for economy flights when they went..

Just had a quick look at KLM for example to Bangkok, £1300 just to get there for a week on boxing day, that's before you connect to 1 of the islands!

Cheers Ann  Smiley will check it out.. Vegas would be perfect actually! Would probably be warmish, was in Nov.. But would end up costing far too much, and we'd prefer short haul, the flights look busy anyway on boxing day..

Another suggestion you could try Benidorm ,  its coffin dodger season so you and your lads have a good chance of pulling,  remember to pack lubes  Lips Sealed

May I suggest you check out http://www.moneysavingexpert.com and go to the travel forum there for some great ideas.

They have plenty of tips on how to do things cheaply in Vegas.

Ive been Tenerife a few times over xmas.

We stayed a taxi away from the main resort at a place called Costa Adeje.

We stayed at the Bahia Principe which is a 4* all inclusive and has about 6 themed restaurants (Italian, Seafood, Spanish, oriental etc) and it was decent enough. 3 or 4 pools and a flight of steps down to a hotel-only strip of beach amongst a couple of rocks.

It's relaxing all day and then a taxi into town for a beers on a night time. I prefered it this way, otherwise you get hassled all day long by time share touts coming over, some of them are proper leary and aggressive gits and you can see them spot you and they surround you 3 at a time and proper scumbags.

Just one tip though Chris - watch out for the Dorada beer.

They had it on tap at the hotel and they had to fish a drunken middle aged German out the pool !

I laughed hard, then that night had about 6 pints (served in frosted pint glasses) and next thing i was singing to the entire pub which is not my style at all. A couple more Dorada later and i was being helped into a taxi and i went several shades of green as it sped us home. Then as it pulled up outside of the hotel i staggered out, threw all the euros i had in my pocket at the taxi driver before hurling all over the marble hotel foyer in front 40 guests who'd arrived on a night flight.

Needless to say, i kept a low profile the next couple of days around the pool until we checked out for home.  Lips Sealed
