Joan Guzman in Manchester: Spars John Murray

Joan Guzman and Lee Beard (pic by C Gibson)

One of the sport's pound for pound, most talented boxers, Joan Guzman is in rainy England under the expert tutelage of former-Hatton trainer Lee Beard, as they gradually marry that agility with British grit.

Long discussed as a fighter who could have schooled Manny Pacquiao at lightweight, the Dominican born fighter holds an unbeaten record with 29 wins and 17 of those wins coming by KO.

But following a torrid fight with Ali Funeka in November last year, which resulted in a draw, the 5'7 orthodox fighter decided to address his whole regime. After discussions with several of America's top trainers, it was Manchester man Lee Beard who impressed Team Guzman the most, with his assessments of Joan and his plans to bring out the very best in the Brooklyn resident.

Having spent part of January over in New York with Guzman, it was decided to bring him over to the hard streets of the North England to inject some steel into the fighter, with tough local sparring and a training programme devloped by the best nutritionist in boxing, Kerry Kayes.

John Murray, the Hennessy promoted British lightweight champion has been one of a few to step in the ring with Guzman.

"Joan's natural ability is phenomenal." Said Beard

"But we aim to sharpen those tools even further, bringing in more strength, conditioning and in the rematch with Funeka, he will bring the total package."

Full Interview to follow shortly.

Arthur Abraham flys back home

28.02.10

Arthur Abraham

Arthur Abraham has closed his Palm Springs camp and will head back to his home city of Berlin, Germany.

Following the withdrawal of Andre Dirrell from their March 6th date with a back injury, the Armenian-born puncher will head home for a couple of weeks before returning back to America nearer their March 27th date.

The rescheduled fight will be held at the Joe Louis stadium, which is only around 40 miles or so from Andre Dirrell's home town of Flint Michigan.

Many believe that Dirrell can beat Arthur Abraham and the postponement has handed the former Bronze medal winning Olympian a nice home-town advantage.

Kalle Saulerland will likely be unhappy with this, given that his other fighter in the Super Six tourney, Mikkel Kessler was not given a fair shake by the American referee in the loss on to cuts to Andre Ward.

Ward will have his second fight on the trot in his hometown when he faces Allan green during his second phase of the Super Six tournament.

Katsidis manager confident Mitchell will travel to Oz

24.02.10

Kevin Mitchell

Brendon Smith, who manages Michael Katsidis is confident that he can beat Frank Warren during the purse bid process to bring the fight to Australia. Infact he has requested the bid date comes forward so that he can begin making suitable arrangements.

"There has been correspondence and I don't believe an agreement will be reached and therefore I have called for the purse bid to be brought forward," Smith told Sportsnut, a popular Australian website.

Smith also admires Kevin Mitchell's tenacity and believes that the Londoner would have no problem with travelling to Australia to fight their popular warrior icon, who has not boxed in his homeland for almost 4 years now.

"What a great fight for Australia it will be" said Smith "Frank Warren is confident and we are confident." he concluded.

Given that Australian TV has a relative amount of finacial leverage, it could be interesting to see if Warren's large wallet will ensure the fight gets put on in the UK.

Either way, when promoters get hungry to win a purse bid, it's always good news for the fighters' bank balance.

McAllister vs Murphy added to Haye bill

24.02.10

Lee Mcallister

Lee McAllister (33-2, 7ko) is set to defend his Commonwealth lightweight title at Manchester’s MEN Arena on April 3rd against Brighton's Ben Murphy (7-2-1, 3ko)

Murphy, promoted by Frank Maloney said that “What Ben lacks in skills he makes up for in determination and he doesn’t know how to take a backward step but all credit to McAllister for agreeing to defend against Ben, who is a fully paid up member of the ‘who needs him?’ club.”

Murphy, a fighter much better than his record suggests has struggled for fights since he turned pro 3 years ago.

George Groves has also been reported to be fighting the tough, fighting policeman from Accra, Charles Adamhu on the undercard for his commonwealth strap.

The night is shaping up to a decent undercard for those making the journey to Manchester.
