Audley hammers nail into British boxing coffin
13.11.10
In one of the most bitterly dissapointing fights in recent years, Audley Harrison landed just a solitary connecting jab in 3 dreadful rounds of boxing tonight at the MEN arena.
The wall of booing began within the first half of the opening round, as defending WBA champion David Haye stalked his opponent with bad intentions.
Haye finally pounced on the tedious Harrison during the opening of the third round and within moments had Audley backed up onto the ropes, as Haye began landing fast, hard shots which dropped Audley to the canvas heavily.
Harrison managed to rise up and beat the count and a forlorn Haye paused for a split second as if he knew he had to put the old dog out of it's misery.
The fight was stopped by the referee at 1.10 of round 3 as Haye launched only his second real wave of shots of the whole contest.
Ringside members of the British Boxing fraternity including Ricky Hatton and Lennox Lewis were lost for words with the lack of effort from Harrison
"I can punch and land whenever I choose to." Said Haye from ringside.
"I put a lot of money on the third round, a lot of my friends and family put money on the third round - so I didn't want to knock him out too early to let them down. Ask around I told everyone that I'd do him in the third round."
When SKY commentator Adam Smith asked Haye whether the Klitschko fight would eventually happen, Haye confirmed it was his next intention.
"Next year that fight is gonna happen. I know there is nowhere else for them to go. They are fighting the Rahman's and Brigg's, the fighters that everyone is bored of. Big fat Americans coming over for a payday. They have no other options and they need to sit at the table and talk sense."
Haye finally closed the 'lid' on Harrison by declaring that he would take him out for a drink afterwards.
Perhaps he could get him a pint of beer made famous in Bermondsey of all places, a beer aptly named 'Courage'.
But the big question is not whether Audley continues or not... it's whether Stonebridge Adventure playground remains open.
