Macklin looks flat in tough win over Varon

Cut and tired: Macklin wins on points

EBU middlweight champion Matthew Macklin kept his world title ambitions on track tonight, despite a poor showing by his own standards against a tough, underrated Spanish challenger tonight in Ruben Varon.

Macklin improves to 28-2 (19ko) with scores of 116-115, 116-113 and an inaccurate 117-111. But the Joe Gallagher trained Birmingham man was tested hard, pushed back and cut around both eyes by the Madrid mauler.

"I made hard work of it. I hit the wall in the mid rounds. It wasn't my best night's work but I still got the win." said Macklin.

Varon slips to 35-6 but leaves with his head held high.
