Macklin chooses Gevor over Martin Murray

Martin Murray

Former European champion Matthew Macklin has chosen Khoren Gevor over unbeaten domestic rival Martin Murray for his next bout it has been revealed.

Heavy handed Macklin (28-2, 19ko) will fight Gevor (31-5, 16ko) on the forthcoming WBA light welterweight defence by Amir Khan against Ireland's Paul McCloskey at Manchester MEN on the 16th April in a Sky pay per view show.

“When Winky Wright pulled out of the fight injured, Macklin’s people rang us and offered me the fight,” Murray told the Liverpool Echo. “There was no question about it. I took the fight straight away."

“But early last week we got a call back and Macklin had rejected it.

Murray, unbeaten in 21 fights is promoted by Hatton promotions, who are promoting the event.

“I think Sky and perhaps Golden Boy as well were keen for two British fighters to meet because it is guaranteed to be a good fight. I totally understand why Macklin did not want it because I’ve got everything to gain and he’s got everything to lose.”

The St Helen's fighter will now square off against Brazilian John Anderson Carvalho (21-4, 8ko) for the WBA international middleweight title on the same undercard.
