Bute Stops Magee - calls out Kessler

Bute drops Magee in 10th

IBF Super middleweight champion Lucian Bute overcame Ireland's Brian Magee last night at the Bell centre in front of a packed audience.

The unbeaten Canadian of Romanian birth, improved his record to 28-0 (23ko) whilst former European champion Magee slips to 34-4 (24ko).

Starting brightly, Magee caught Bute several times with the right jab, left hook combination, forcing the champion to change up his game plan.

Unfortunately Magee hunted success with the same shot selection for quite some time afterwards, using the same approach - which was quickly read by the champion and negated with hurtful body shots that dropped Magee in the sixth and twice in the seventh round.

But Magee toughed it out and continued with his plans to pick pocket Bute wherever he could. But the champion's greater skill and shot selection began to tell as he slammed home harder shots with greater authority - until a chopping uppercut felled Magee during the tenth round.

Magee paused before crumbling to the canvas, as the referee immeadiately waved off the fight.

The Irishman got up quickly and seemed to be more angry than hurt. His big opportunity had fell through, but he could still be proud of his efforts, fighting a confident champion in his hometown.

Afterwards the champion declared that he would be happy to fight Mikkel Kessler in New York, Las Vegas or even Romania next.

The Dane was ringside to watch Bute's impressive victory and it would appear that they will be locking horns in the next sixth months following Kessler's rumoured warm-up fight against a yet to be named opponent.
