Allakhverdiev ends Joan Guzman unbeaten record
Russian southpaw Khabib Allakhverdiev (18-0) has taken the vacant WBA light welter title, beating Joan Guzman on a technical decision after the Dominican fighter suffered a leg injury in the 8th round.
The title was vacated after Marcos Maidana headed up to the 147lb Welter division.
Highly skilled Guzman's loss has been a long time coming, the almost prodigal talent has seen his career descend into a mess of failed weight, drugs bans and his first career defeat.
Whilst there is no doubting the terrible injury he suffered to his leg, he was set to lose the bout anyway, bar a dramatic knockout.
Allakhverdiev decked Guzman in the third round, with his southpaw pressure and reach advantage.
After a few more compelling rounds, the Russian was then awarded the title on split decision when the referee ruled two-time former world champion Guzman could not continue after apparently twisting his leg during an exchange.
At first Guzman continued with the leg, but during a further exchange hit the canvas, but it was not a punch that felled him, just the Russian's size and strength leaning over the shorter Guzman.
Allakhverdiev retains his unbeaten record, going to 18-0, whereas Guzman falls to 33-1-1.
He boasts wins over Nate Campbell, Kaizer Mabuza and now Joan Guzman.
