Andre Ward has shoulder woes: Pavlik fight OFF
The domino effect of Andre Ward's injury might have far reaching effects on the 168lb division.
Ward, who postponed the Kelly Pavlik fight once already, has failed to recover from a shoulder injury sustained in training - and now has taken the decision to go under the knife in an effort to resolve the problem.
Now the Pavlik fight is dead in the water, leaving the former middleweight star scratching around for a new opponent. Sources claim Lucian Bute, a fight Pavlik knocked back last year, may be the one that his manager Cameron Dunkin may pursue in light of Ward's withdrawal.
"I don't know what we're gonna do, but we're going to move forward and get Kelly a fight and get him back in the ring." Dunkin told ESPN.
"I sent him a text to let him know what was up because I couldn't get in touch with him."
Meanwhile Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler, who look set to face each other in another war for the fans, might see their prize of a Ward rematch also affected by the American's surgery.
Eddie Hearn, who promotes Carl Froch, has been pretty vocal in stating that if 'The Cobra' overcomes the Dane, then a second fight with Ward will be the the focus of their minds.
But if the surgery does not bear fruit in the short term, then it could be that the winner of Froch vs Kessler may have to pursue other avenues later in the year.
