Champion boxer tragically killed
A promising young amateur champion has been found badly beaten at his family home in South Phoenix following a possible robbery.
Alexis Urbina, just 17-years-old, was found unconscious and covered in blood in the family's living room about 1:30pm Tuesday.
Police are investigating the case as a homicide and authorities say Urbina died of his injuries Thursday at a nearby hospital.
There was no obvious sign of forced entry into the house, but Urbina's family say some of his boxing memorabilia is missing. It’s unclear at present if robbery is the motive and Police are waiting for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Urbina won the 141-pound Youth Men's Division at the USA Boxing National Championships in April at Spokane, Wash.
After claiming that title at just 16-years-old, it was expected that talented Alexis was headed to the 2016 Olympics as part of the USA boxing team.
