16.12.07 Hatton looking for next challenge
A week on from his defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Ricky Hatton has paid tribute to the 'best fighter in the world' and has ruled out retiring from the sport.
Hatton was floored in the 10th round of the WBC welterweight title bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last Saturday, and while he admits he was frustrated by the performance of the referee, he was full of praise for Mayweather.
"Looking back and reflecting there are always thing after the fight that you could have done better, but ultimately I can't take it away from my opponent," he told Setanta Sports.
"He is everything he said he was - he deserves to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
"I lost my cool a couple of times. I was doing alright up to the half way stage and then I lost my way and lost my cool a little bit.
"It didn't help matters - I was very frustrated with the referee, but that isn't Floyd Mayweather's fault. I'd rather give praise to the opponent than anything else."
There have been suggestions that Hatton could return to the 10st division, but the fighter has no regrets about moving up for the Mayweather bout.
"I could have stayed at my usual weight - light welter weight - I could have stayed there, defended my title and maybe I could have gone to 60 fights unbeaten, but it was always a challenge for me - not just moving up a weight but fighting the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world," he added.
"You have to know Ricky Hatton to know that I am not going to end my career on that sort of note. Even though I did fight the best, there is still a lot more for Ricky Hatton to do in boxing."
When asked about the possibility of a rematch, Hatton continued: "I'd fight him again - I'd fight King Kong.
"One of my best qualities is that I'm fearless - maybe I could have seen the final bell if I hadn't gone straight in there - but I have just got to sit back, enjoy Christmas with my family and see what fights are offered.
"It's all about the challenge for me. I want fights that are going to leave a legacy."
