Jhonny Gonzalez to have tune-up before Mares rematch

WBC Featherweight champion, Jhonny Gonzalez (32), may have one additional outing before his proposed rematch with Abner Mares in May.

Gonzalez' trainer, Ignacio Beristain, has said that his charge will face Romania's Viorel Simion in what could only be described as a tune-up title defence before the all-Mexican showdown in the spring.

Simion, a (16-1, 7 KOs) fellow 32-year-old was last seen fighting in Britain against fellow contender Lee Selby for the WBC International title. That night Selby came through his first test of international experience to record a 12-round unanimous decision despite some tricky moments.

Beristain has said "Gonzalez will learn a lot from this fight and it'll help him with rhythm, reflexes and timing before once again facing Mares by May this year."

Mares will be hoping his fellow countryman can come through unscathed so he can attempt to avenge the only defeat of his professional career after being sensationally knocked out by Gonzalez in the first round when the pair met last August.
