From Selby to Joshua to Mucha: Livefight interviews the stars of 'Reloaded'

By @shaun_brown

The A-List of Welsh boxing had to endure some painful moments in 2013. Gavin Rees was gallant but found wanting in defeat to Adrien Broner, Gary Buckland was on the wrong end of the British knockout of the year against Stephen Smith and Nathan Cleverly’s dreams of light heavyweight supremacy were crushed by the formidable Sergey Kovalev.

This Saturday night at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena and live on Sky Sports, Lee Selby looks to take another step to mixing it with the world’s best at 126lbs when he tackles veteran Rendall Munroe for the vacant European Featherweight title.

Munroe, a former world title challenger at super-bantamweight, will be aiming to prove that age is but a number when the 33-year-old attempts to win his second European title after defeating Kiko Martinez in 2008 for the 122lb strap.

An interesting undercard pits fellow Welshmen, Gavin Rees agnd Gary Buckland against one another in a British lightweight title eliminator over twelve rounds. In what could likely be the fight of the night, the bout is must-win for both fighters but even more so for Rees. The former light-welterweight world champion has already admitted that defeat could signal the end of a professional career that is now into its 16th year.

On the same night, Welsh boxing fans will get their first glimpse of Olympic Gold Medallist Anthony Joshua. But will the popular heavyweight prospect be on the end of cheers or boos when he takes on the home fighter Dorian Darch over six rounds?

Prizefighter winner Chris Jenkins returns to action over eight rounds as he looks to make further inroads into the British light-welterweight division. Erick Ochieng will be dipping his toe into the welterweight ranks when he takes on Dale Evans in a potential cracker. There are also returns for former European Middleweight champion Kerry Hope, Tobias Webb and intriguing prospect Tamuka Mucha. And Cardiff will bid farewell to one of Welsh boxing’s finest stalwarts when 38-year-old Jason Cook looks to win the vacant Welsh light-welterweight title for a second time as he faces Tony Pace over ten rounds.

With all that to look forward to on Saturday night why not find out what some of these fighters and their trainers have been saying ahead of the first big British boxing show of 2014?
