The BBC Sports Personality of the Year could be facing Bernard Hopkins as early as next April in Las Vegas.

Undisputed super-middleweight champion Calzaghe, 35, has been chasing a showdown with Hopkins for years but it looks to have become a reality after weeks of intense negotiations.

Calzaghe, who has been offered a career-high £4million purse, would get the chance to become a two-weight world champion as he steps up to light-heavyweight to fight 43-year-old Hopkins.

The Welshman said: “My intention is to have two more fights in one year and then retire as undefeated world champion.

“I want one of those fights to be against Hopkins in Las Vegas. I’ve had a taste of it watching Ricky Hatton’s fight from ringside and I’d like that for myself.”
