30.03.08 Abraham retains IBF strap

Arthur Abraham retained his IBF middleweight title with a 12th-round knockout victory over Elvin Ayala in Kiel.

Abraham, who stopped Britain's Wayne Elcock in his previous contest, took his unbeaten record to 26 with 21 by way of knockout after Ayala failed to beat the count inside the final minute of the contest.

'King Arthur' was always in control of the fight despite a plucky challenge from the American, who went down in the fifth and was always fighting a losing battle thereafter.

Abraham is now slated to make the eighth defence of his title at New York's Madison Square Garden in June against an as-yet un-named opponent, while a unification bout with Kelly Pavlik could happen at a later date.

"Kiel was bigger for me than New York, but now that's over, I am looking for a big fight in the United States later this year," said the 28-year-old German. "I want to show the fans there what I can do."
