Chris Byrd demolished by George in the 9th (video)
Chris Byrd's Light Heavyweight ambitions were left in tatters last night after the worse possible debut against an opponent regarded as a 'light puncher' in Shaun George.
George who had a record of 17-2 (8ko's) was a former Cruiserweight himself and recently lost a 12 round decision to Haye victim and former EBU champion, Alexander Gurov in February 2007.
Byrd who is a former Super Heavyweight champion, who won the WBO title after Vitali Klitchko retired with a torn shoulder which was later diagnosed as a rotator cuff injury in 2000.
Other Chris Byrd victories included a 12 round points decision over Evander Holyfield in 2002 and the huge punching David Tua in 2001. So the KO loss to George suprised the boxing world last night.
Byrd was dropped by Shaun George in round one and later in the fight George hammered Byrd with his right hand at will all night, until finally flooring Byrd twice in the ninth round, prompting the referee Jay Nady to stop the fight.
