Khan knocks out Salita in first round

Amir Khan made a succesful defence of his WBA light welterweight title tonight by halting American-Ukranian, Dimitri Salita tonight in Newcastle in just 76 seconds.

Khan, who dropped Salita with the first right hand he threw in about 10 seconds of the round commencing, then pounced on Salita, flooring him again. He was allowed to fight out but was halted by the referee amidst a flurry of shots from Khan.

"We trained for power tonight. We watched the Kotelinik fight back and wanted to rectify mistakes, so me and Alex Ariza and Freddie Roach worked on power."

"2010 will be a big year for me and there's going to be some big fights."

"It's my birthday in 3 days so this is an early birthday present. Next year me and Frank want to go to America and show them what we can do."

Elsewhere Alex Arthur lost on points to Nigel Wright and Kevin Mitchell outpointed Khan's bogeyman, Breidis Prescott.
