Ryan Rhodes another step towards title shot

Sheffield's light middleweight took another step towards a title shot last night with a stoppage victory over visiting Italian, Luca Messi. Rhodes outclassed the 35-year old from the outset, capturing the European title in the process.

Rhodes (44-4, 30ko) forced a stoppage by the referee after Messi took a barrage of shots in the 6th round. The Italian now drops to 36-8.

The European title will propel Rhodes into the rankings and with Ricky Hatton's finacial and promotional clout behind him, he should look to challenge sooner rather than later.

Rhodes recently announced he would like to fight Antonio Margarito, if the Mexican continued at 154lb following his return fight last week at the weight class.

"Me and Ricky (Hatton) have a few meetings with a few different promoters to see what path I'm going to take. If I can't immediately get a world title fight then I'd love to defend my European title against Lukas Konecny who is my mandatory."
