Pirog beats up and knocks out Jacobs

1.08.10

30-year old Russian Dmitry Pirog bullied and hammered the American starlet Danny Jacobs to the ground in 5 one-sided rounds.

Jacobs, known as 'The Golden Child' racked up a 20-0 record against journeyman and sub-par opponents on the undercards of Golden Boy shows since his 2007 debut. And last night that lack of experience came home to roost when he faced the bigger, more aggressive Pirog for the vacant WBO middleweight title.

Despite having less fights than Jacobs as a professional, he'd done 50% more rounds en route to his title opportunity. That tougher learning curve stood him in good stead for his American debut.

Pirog now moves to 17-0 (14KO) and rubs shoulders with Sergio Martinez as a fellow world title holder at 160lb. But the rest of the division is up for grabs, with no true stand-out challenger yet to emerge.

Macklin looks set to fight Barker to determine the best in the UK, N'Dam continues to make great strides from his French base. Seb Sylvester hung onto his IBF crown with a draw against Karmazin and finally Zbik added another win to his 30-0 record last night in Germany.

Throw in the likes of Golovkin, Lemieux and Sturm and the middleweight division starts to look a lot more interesting than it did 12 months ago, with Pirog the first of the new breed to break through and prove his metal.
