03.11.07 McIntyre stuns Anderson!!

By Pete "Hitman" Bamforth

In a remarkable opening two rounds lightly regarded underdog Kevin McIntyre stuned both the boxing fraternity and the packed Magnum Centre in Scotland as he twice knocked down the now former British Welterweight champion Kevin Anderson.

Anderson was rocked in the first round with a blistering combination ending in a short right hook to the temple which floored the champion, referee Mickey Vann gave the standing eight count to Anderson who despite beating Vann’s count still looked very unsteady on his feet. There was yet more controversy to come as Anderson’s corner mysteriously misplaced his gumshield just prior to round two giving Kevin a few more vital seconds to compose himself, it looked to be in vein though as McIntyre again started the round strongly using the southpaw jab effectively and backing Anderson up.

McIntyre, left, stuns the boxing world with his dominant performance

McIntyre, a postman by trade, is not known for his power with only 8 stoppages from 25 wins which is why it came as a bit of a shock when the champion was put down again by the Paisley man in the second round, Anderson again beat the count but was by now looking desperate, swinging wildly all the while McIntyre was countering Andersons sloppy work.

The rhythm of the fight was now set, with Anderson’s timing no where near where it needed to be, Kevin McIntyre used his awkward southpaw stance to frustrate Anderson and seemingly pick him off at will. Despite desperate attempts to raise their mans spirit’s the champions corner could only watch as Anderson’s dream of winning the Lord Lonsdale belt outright slipped away round by round.

Round seven was action packed with both men trading heavy blows, it was however, McIntyre who looked snappier and more effective in the exchanges.

The scores reflect a dominant performance by the challenger who snatched away the title with a 120-107, 119-108, 118-110 unanimous decision.
