05.04.08 Brave Thaxton post-fight interview

After 5 rounds at York Hall last night Jon Thaxton's (33-8, 18ko) challenge ended. The decision was made by his corner team to pull him out of his European challenge against Yuri Romanov (21-2, 14ko) after the Norwich fighter sustained a vicious cut above his right eye.

"I haven't seen the fight nor have i seen the cut, but if Domenic says it's the right decision, then it's the right decision" Said a disappointed Thaxton at ringside following the fight with Romanov.

"Romanov was very strong, but i was just getting into it - you know, it usually takes me a couple of rounds to get into it anyway, but i could never catch him clean..." Said Thaxton who now slips to his 8th career defeat.

"Yep he kept coming forward but how long would he have kept coming? would i have caught with a clean shot? ...you know it's just how it is isn't it?"

"I'm gutted, i trained very very hard and am super fit.. i tained hard for myself, my team and I'm also gutted for my family"

Dominic Ingle, speaking on the cut that forced him to pull Thaxton out from the fight "I've seen some cuts in my time, but that one is down to the bone. It may have gone on for another couple of rounds but by the time the ref stops it, the cut would be halfway across his face"

Thaxton, when asked if he would be back "Of course i'll be back !"

"The kid (Romanov) was strong... but that's how it goes"

Thaxton who remains the British title holder, is widely expected to rematch Lee Meager at some point in the summer when his injury has fully healed.
