13.04.08 Kermit Cintron demolished by Margarito (video)
Kermit Cintron's worst nightmare came back again last night as his nemesis, Antonio Margarito ground down and then knocked out the American-based Puerto Rican in 6 brutal rounds.
Cintron, who started the fight brightly, was catching Antonio with any shot he cared to throw the mexican's way during the opening round and it would seem that the teaching's of the Kronk gym had given him the tools to revenge his first defeat to Margarito, back in April 2005 for the Mexican's WBO title.
Following Cintron's stunning KO of Walter Matthysse last year, some pundits had predicted that Kermit would reverse the loss - but Margarito simply walked through Cintron's bombs and landed his own.
There was no finesse shown by Margarito, just pure aggression and desire which ground down Cintron rapidly.
Manny Steward pleaded with Kermit in the corner at the end of the 5th round to stick to his boxing, but it was no use and it would seem Cintron was consumed by the occasion and after jabbing his way through the first minute of round 6, using his reach to good effect, Antonio piled on the pressure and trapped him against the ropes.
Throwing heavy body shots, Margarito moved his attack upstairs to Cintron's head, which created an opening to the liver which Margarito sank a spiteful left hook into, sinking the IBF champion to the floor.
The ref counted him out at 1.57 of the 6th round and Kermit now slips to 29-2 (27ko) whilst the newly-crowned IBF Champion, Antonio Margarito moves up to 36-5 (26ko).
Bob Arum is expected to make the winner of this fight, the next big opponent for Miguel Cotto in the summer at Madison Square Garden.
Meanwhile Kermit Cintron is perhaps now out of the mix at Welterweight and it would be a difficult and slow route to regain momentum from that loss.
Retirement or a step up in weight is perhaps on the cards for Puerto Rican now.
