Ryan Rhodes, featuring in his 43rd fight in a 13 year long career was simply too good in all departments and punished Woolcombe with hard combinations. Woolcombe simply had no answer to the Southpaw stylist and despite his valiant attempts to rally during some rounds never really made a dent in the 'Spice Boy'
From the opening bell, the brave Woolcombe endeavoured to get into the fight but the superior hand speed and technical ability of the older man was just to much for youth and energy alone to overcome and Woolcombe was gradually ground down.
Despite some close middle rounds, Rhodes was seemingly in control and was landing hard shots at will and was moving Woolcombe around the ring where he wanted him.
The ending came near the start of the 9th round with Rhodes landing a hard, thudding shot to the temple of Woolcombe, who paused then dropped to the floor partly concussed. Mickey Vann immediately got the ringside paramedics in to check on his condition and the after a few tense moments the Londoner rose to his feet to the relief of his 600-strong friends and supporters in the York Hall.
Ryan Rhodes now moves his record to 39-4 (27ko) whilst Gary Woolcombe slips to 25-2 (10ko).
