Even with his move up two weight classes, three-time world champion Diego "Chico" Corrales failed to make weight for tonight's 10-round welterweight bout at the Shrine Mosque.
Corrales, 29, checked in at 149 pounds for the 8 p.m. fight, televised live by Showtime, missing the limit by two pounds.
Fortunately for Corrales, his opponent, Joshua Clottey, weighed in at 151 pounds. Huddles formed all over the room at the Oasis Hotel and Convention Center to decide what would happen next.
Clottey, 30, was then hustled to a nearby health club and given two hours to drop the two pounds needed to match Corrales. He did it, running on a treadmill and sitting in a sauna, eliminating any more headaches during Friday's weigh-in.
Fight on.
"It should be a good fight," Corrales said. "I'm in great shape and ready to go."
Corrales (40-4, 33 knockouts) has had issues with making weight in his past two fights (both losses), causing him to move up to a more reasonable weight class.
He will be facing a significant challenge from Clottey (30-2, 20 knockouts), whose two losses were controversial decisions. There has been little verbal sparring between the fighters leading into today's bout.
"I don't like to talk trash," Clottey said. "All that matters is what happens in the ring."
Corrales said fans will enjoy the pace of the main event, which is preceded by nine undercard bouts, beginning at 5:30.
"I'm going to try and get after him and move and keep him off center," Corrales said.
Corrales, whose wife is from St. Louis, said he has enjoyed his time in Springfield and hopes tonight's bout will put him back on track in a distinguished career.
"This is a big fight for me," he said. "The people here have been very good to me and very friendly. I thought Springfield was only in 'The Simpsons.' I didn't know it was a real place."
